ORGY OF THE DEAD - Vinegar Syndrome Blu-ray Review

Blu-ray/DVD

The Film
ORGY OF THE DEAD is a classic piece of 60s sexploitation from a script by the infamous cult filmmaker Ed Wood. This nudie cutie is 90 minutes of topless go-go dancing, booty shaking exiliration. "But what about the plot?" you ask. Well, that revolves around a man and his wife taking a late night drive to a spooky cemetery hoping to get inspiration for the man's next book but a crash sends them rolling into the graveyard and face to face with the rituals of the Master and his servants which include a Vampira ripoff and the hammiest mummy and wolfman you've seen lately as they punish a group of sexy undead women for their sins and dirty deeds committed while alive.

And really most of that punishment is dancing around the graveyard, which actually has a good look and design while a fog machine goes full force before they're wisked away by the Master's servants for all eternity. I'm not complaining about it, these women are gorgeous.

That sums up ORGY OF THE DEAD. Beautiful woman after beautiful woman dancing her heart out to a jazz number that has been influenced by too much time in a haunted house while wearing very little at all or a corny costume (see the Cat Lady). Most of these women went on to do very little acting other than this picture as they were hired for their dancing abilities. The exception to this is Nadejda Dobrev who has had a sporadic but respectable acting career that continues to this day. She wasn't asked to do anything more than the other girls however. The real star of the show is Criswell, who portrays the Master and spends the majority of his time reading off of cue cards and not making eye contact with anyone he's supposed to. He's wonderfully cheesy and not at all threatening. He's probably the most memorable thing besides the girls but not mentioning Fawn Silver who is credited as The Black Ghoul which is really just codename for Vampira Ripoff is great. She may not be Vampira but she's got the look and carries herself with that same sort of confidence. She may be the best part of the cast.

But let's all be honest, we're not here for the cast. We're here for graveyard go-go dancing, boobies and chuckles. And we get all of that. Despite the fact that nudie cuties were on their way out for rougher and more explicit style of sexploitation by 1965 it doesn't change the fact that ORGY OF THE DEAD is a lot of fun to watch. Is it something you want to sit down and analyze? Don't be silly, of course not. But if you're looking for something to pop on, bob your head with, get an occasional laugh and enjoy some fantastic eye candy perhaps while you're taking care of something around the house or writing a paper then ORGY OF THE DEAD is the perfect companion for you.

The Audio & Video
Vinegar Syndrome has given ORGY OF THE DEAD a brand new 2K scan and restoration from the original 35mm camera negative and you couldn't ask for a nicer presentation. Presented in a 16x9 anamorphic widescreen transfer, the colorful costumes are vibrant and have just enough pop to them to really look exceptional. The black levels are deep with no compression or blocking issues. Detail is great on surfaces and textures from the various headstones and set dressing around the cemetery to the silkiness of Criswell's cape that you can almost feel the silky smoothness in your hands. That'd make for a nice pair of bedsheets... or undies. The audio is presented in a DTS-HD Master Audio mono track that is perfectly balanced between the dialogue and the moody, jazzy score. There's no distortion or damage to the track and it is also free of background noise.

The Extras
-Audio Commentary with Ed Wood biographer Rudolph Grey and exploitation legend Frank Henenlotter
-"Impressions Of Nadejda" - Video interview with actress Nadejda Dobrev
-"Orgy Of The Ted" - Video interview with cinematographer Ted V. Mikels
-Still Gallery
-Reversible Artwork

The Bottom Line
ORGY OF THE DEAD is a classic nudie cutie that may not be deserving of artistic praise but it really is a fun 90 minutes. Add in that Ed Wood wrote the damn thing and it's pretty obvious why this is deserving of such a nice restoration and a spot in any cult film fan's collection.

PSYCHOS IN LOVE (Vinegar Syndrome Blu-ray Review)

USA/1986
Directed By: Gorman Bechard
Written By: Gorman Bechard, Carmine Capobianco
Starring: Carmine Capobianco, Debi Thibeault, Frank Stewart
Color/86 Minutes/Not Rated
Region FREE
Release Date: September 26, 2017
Blu-ray/DVD

The Film
How crazy can one movie get when a couple who hate grapes and love murder fall in love? Pretty damn crazy. And stupid. And funny. And stupid.

Prior to this viewing of PSYCHOS IN LOVE I had very little exposure to the film. In fact, I really had no exposure to the movie itself. I had only seen the big box VHS artwork and knew it was released by Charles Band's Wizard Video label in the 80s and has since become sought after tape for that reason alone despite most opinions of the film being bad and trashing it. I had rarely heard anything positive about it with the most common words associated with the movie being "sucks" and "shit".

Well I will say it is unbelievably stupid. PSYCHOS IN LOVE is a parody of the shot on video splatter films of the 1980s with ridiculous dialogue, intentional goofs and repeated breaking of the 4th  wall. There are moments where actors will speak directly to the director who is off screen, boom mics fall into frame and mess with the actors and the cast will speak directly to the audience. This all coming from a story that involves a new couple who has fallen madly in love because of their mutual disdain for grapes and their passion for murder. If there's a more solid foundation for a relationship I haven't seen it.

PSYCHOS IN LOVE has its tongue planted firmly in its cheek so if you're expecting a dark, serious horror film filled with gore you're going to be disappointed. There's plenty of gore as the movie has a pretty decent sized body count with various limbs being lopped and throats slit but it's intentionally campy and comedic but practically well done. One 80s horror trope that PSYCHOS IN LOVE didn't pass up was nudity. There's a lot of gratuitous nudity and all of it is nice eye candy.

PSYCHOS IN LOVE is a lot of stupid silly fun but it is definitely flawed. The film was written by Gorman Bechard, who directed the film, and Carmine Capobianco who stars as Joe. The duo wrote large chunks of the script in a strip club which is funny because one second I think "Wow, this movie is pretty decent for being written in a strip club" and then I follow that up with "This is exactly the type of movie that you could write in a strip club". It's clever and goofy but it almost relies on luck for the jokes landing or working. A single stupid line of dialogue makes the ridiculous grape hatred plot device work while there's an endless number of equally ridiculous and random plot devices that would have fell flat on their face. Luckily Carmine Capobianco and his co-star Debi Thibeault are great together and both genuinely funny with this material. Their performances are stilted and uneven but genuine and it works. The material simply works with their delivery and they're a pleasure to watch.

I think PSYCHOS IN LOVE is one of those utterly ridiculous movies that will be infinitely re-watchable for how stupid it is. It could be billed with some of the infamous so-bad-they're-good movies but it wouldn't be fair to lump it in with them as the filmmakers knew what they were making with PSYCHOS IN LOVE and made an intentional parody that definitely brings more laughs than groans.

The Audio & Video
Vinegar Syndrome has given PSYCHOS IN LOVE a new 2K scan and restoration from the original 16mm camera negative and it has resulted in a really nice looking 1.33:1 full frame transfer. Given that this movie was shot on 16mm it won't have quite the same amount of detail and clarity as a film shot on 35mm would but it still looks quite nice. The picture is clean and free of any dirt and debris. There's a good sharpness and natural grain structure that lets you know you're watching a movie that was shot on real film. The audio is presented in a DTS-HD Master Audio Mono track that sounds crystal clear and crisp. There's no damage such as hissing or popping and there's no background noise. The track balances dialogue and music nicely.

The Extras
This release features one of the most impressive slate of special features that Vinegar Syndrome has compiled to date and it includes:

-Audio commentary with co-writer/director Gorman Bechard

The Bottom Line

RED ROSES OF PASSION - Vinegar Syndrome Blu-ray Review

USA/1966
Directed By: Joe Sarno
Written By: Joe Sarno
Starring: Patricia McNair, Judson Todd, Jean James
Black & White/80 Minutes/Not Rated
Region FREE
Release date: August 29, 2017
Blu-ray/DVD
Limited Edition: 2,000

The Film
Joe Sarno spent his career making erotic films from sexploitation to soft and hard pornos. RED ROSES OF PASSION is nudie cutie with a bit of an exploitive edge. Carla (Patricia McNair) lives with her aunt and cousin who have a conservative point of view on sex and look down on Carla for her more adventurous sexcapades and one night stands. One of Carla's friends invites her to a meeting of The Cult Of Pan, a sexually driven group digging into the occult. Shortly after the cult gets their hands on Carla's aunt and cousin and turn them into lustful creatures with a desire for sex that can't be satisfied.

RED ROSES OF PASSION is sexay! From start to finish it follows around a handful of attractive women in various states of undress, commonly in totally sheer lingerie or nude while the buff manslave of the cult rubs them down with the carnal roses that drives women to sexual euphoria. At only 80 minutes these scenes don't overstay their welcome, especially as we watch Carla drive her prude relatives to the brink of insanity and force them to catfight each other over who is going to get the delivery man and his roses for the evening.

Patricia McNair is a strong lead in this, both beautiful and strong, giving us enough of both so that her character is completely believable. It's said that this is one of a handful of "supernatural" themed films from Joe Sarno and while there is a slight touch of it with the cult and and their roses, it's barely there. It doesn't really make much of a difference either way. If it is supernaturally themed then that's another dimension the film takes on, but even if it's just nonsense and there's really no intention on any supernatural motives or themes in the film it is still sexy as hell. And that's the important thing here.

The Audio & Video
The new 2K scan of the original 35mm camera negative looks gorgeous. Vinegar Syndrome's anamorphic widescreen transfer is crystal clear with deep blacks levels in the stark black and white photography. Detail level is great from fleshy skin tones to the lacy lingerie. The DTS-HDMA mono audio mix is just about perfect. There's no damage or distortions and the mix is crisp and free of background noise. The score perfectly blends with the dialogue. English SDH subtitles are available.

The Extras
The lone extra is a 20 minute video interview with Joe Sarno historian Michael Bowen.

The Bottom Line
Fans of Joe Sarno or sexploitation fans in general will definitely want to add this one to their collection.

Los Angeles, CA - Thursday, September 7, 2017 - Beyond Fest, the highest-attended genre film festival in the US, is excited to announce its full slate of 2017 programming featuring 32 events and 23 West Coast premieres of cinematic excess. Co-presented by Shudder, Beyond Fest returns to Hollywood’s famed Egyptian Theatre for 12 days of movies, music and mayhem spanning Friday, September 29th - Tuesday, October 10th to generate funds for the nonprofit 501c3 American Cinematheque.

With a diverse slate that includes films from all corners of the globe Beyond Fest is proud to open with BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99 with director S.Craig Zahler returning with Vince Vaughn and Udo Kier in person, while closing night honors are bestowed upon Yorgos Lanthimos’ ferociously-twisted follow-up to THE LOBSTER, THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER. Other hotly-anticipated titles making their debuts include the World Premiere of Justin MacGregor’s BEST F(R)IENDS with Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero reunited and in person, Joe Lynch’s blissfully violent MAYHEM, and, courtesy of Amazon Prime Video, a very special theatrical premiere of JEAN-CLAUDE VAN JOHNSON with the Muscles from Brussels himself, Jean-Claude Van Damme, in person with the show’s cast and creators.

“While the two worst manbaby haircuts on the planet prepared for nuclear destruction, we prepped cinematic armageddon,” said Beyond Fest Co-Founder, Christian Parkes. “We’re immigrants and we saw DR. STRANGELOVE - we know how this ends - but at least we get to watch some great films with our heroes and friends and go out with a real bang.”

The most beloved genre films are highlighted with a series of special event screenings throughout the festival. Arnold Schwarzenegger takes center stage for an explosive 30th anniversary one-two punch of PREDATOR and THE RUNNING MAN. The Master, Dario Argento, will be in attendance to celebrate the 40th anniversary of SUSPIRIA with screenings of Synapse Film’s 4K restoration AND the recently unearthed 35mm print. ‘Car Chases, Collisions & Conversation: An Evening with Edgar Wright and Walter Hill' covers four decades of filmmaking and the interrelated nature of the pulsating smash BABY DRIVER and the seminal THE DRIVER in one epic night. Musical maestro, Paul Williams, will share stories from behind the mask of PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE. Mick Garris and Masters of Horror preside over a reverential tribute to two of the greats - George A. Romero and Tobe Hooper -  with a double bill featuring the West Coast premiere of MOMA and FIlm Foundation’s NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 4K digital restoration and TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. And the theatrical premiere of NAPOLEON DYNAMITE BOOTLEG EDITION pairs a totally gonzo WTF double bill with HOWARD THE DUCK on 70mm with Lea Thompson in person.

Beyond Fest welcomes the return of genre streaming platform Shudder as its co-presenting sponsor, a partnership that provides 14 screenings (11 West Coast premieres) absolutely free to film fans. Every night, the 90-seat ‘Shudder Theatre’ will feature a brand new film selected from across the world including Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s triumphant return BEFORE WE VANISH, home invasion thrill ride BETTER WATCH OUT, the critically acclaimed Canadian zombie shocker LES AFFAMES (THE HUNGRY), Marc Meyers’ searing portrait of a serial-killer-in-the-making, MY FRIEND DAHMER, Alexandre O. Phillippe’s revelatory PSYCHO shower scene doc 78/52, and Ted Geoghegan’s sophomore scalper, MOHAWK.

For Cinematic Void’s sidebar they have enlisted the help of like minds as they venture further into the unknown with a series of special screenings. Author and academic Kier La Janisse will be present for Jean Rollin’s THE GRAPES OF DEATH and the release of the book, Lost Girls: The Phantasmagorical Cinema of Jean Rollin which she is publishing. Friday Night Frights are co-presenting the west coast premiere of the 4K restoration of the thoroughly bugnuts RAWHEAD REX and the Death Waltz Records record release of HELLRAISER on 35mm. And filmmakers Amy Holden Jones and Deborah Brock will be present for a double bill of anniversary screenings of their films SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE and SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE II.
